Mustaches vs Cancer

Summary for 2009:

This is an eight week mustache contest that will commence on October 5th and conclude on November 29th. Each week, contestants will be required to upload photos of their mustache as proof it's existence and as a personal marketing tool for donors. Upon the completion of the eight weeks, the extremely dignified individual bringing in the most donations will be crowned as the "Noblest Mustache on Earth". Oh but wait, there's more; a second champion, "The Peoples Champion", will be the winner of an online poll. So, don't be deterred by your lack of rich friends (I'm looking at you, Chester A. Arthur).

So go register... and I want pictures! :p

I'm thinking about taking Chinchilli Day off. What? I'm a sucker for anthropomorphized stuffed things and they names the guy Hagadus. At least I think they did.

And the Cambridge Who's Who thinks you could be too. Apparently... I should be a recognized archaeologist.

However, I'm submitting myself for Design Ninja.

And hell yes I "liked" this ad. ;)

Saw this on the Facebook Photoshop page. I think I love the color and character palettes.

UGH... Or ARGH!

I have now been up for 27 hours. And I have 4 more to go before I can go home and sleep. For some reason I volunteered for a 24-hour Create-A-thon where a whole bunch of advertisers in the area decided to stay up from 2pm Friday until 2pm Saturday (today) and create logos/ads/billboards/whatever for local non-profits.

4 hours to go. I have to say now that it's almost over it's been a lot of fun, but next year remind me how tired I am right now. Or to go to bed at a decent time the night before I have to do this... or to take a nap before you try to use an X-acto blade. :p

But now, I think it's time for a donut.

I laughed so hard at this one:

Snakes With Feet

My fear of snakes stems largely from an incident when I was 6 and a 7ft black snake decided to drop out of a cedar tree and barely missed me. I hate snakes.

I would have run from the room screaming if that had been clinging to my wall, so kudos to her for beating it to death with a shoe.

We haven't touched on my favorite turtles in a LONG time. Unlike the cavemen, these are still funny. And I'd watch turtles over cavemen in a sitcom any day.

I'd never by a child something that looked like this.

Internet-driven toys are the future, sure, but like I said, still unnerving.

I don't know why you'd want to TICKLE anything from online.

Have To Share

Mostly I have to share 5 & 6.

5-Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you’re going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you’re crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

6
-That’s enough, Nickelback.

Thanks for the laugh Shaun. :D

PANDAmonium

Hey, she said it, not me. :p

Look, they slide! ;)

SyFy...

Ok, so apparently I've taken the summer off. I'm not exactly sure how it's mid-August. Not only that, but I haven't even been watching TV that much. I know... horrors. What the hell?

So my sister drug me out of my self-imposed hermitage and made me watch Ghost Hunters last night. They have these awesome little show promos that were running for Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth (yeah, if you didn't know I love weird shit, now you do), that I just love. I think the way they were shot is gorgeous. I'm also probably about 3 weeks late on this, so humor me.

However, when I went looking for them this morning I found that they're clips from a much longer (almost 3 excruciating minutes) video promoting the whole channel. You have to wade through to the two clips I like. Some of the others aren't bad too... but the music? I don't know... maybe it's just me but I think it ruins it. I'm not sure what I'd pick in it's place... but definitely not something so... so... cute. I think that's the word I'm going for.

Anyway, here's the video. See for yourself. Tell me how you're doing. And I'll try to not stay away so long from now on. :p

If I ever return from the land of "All-I-Do-Is-Work-Sleep-And-Drink" I'm going to make some of these. :) I will also take the time to read all of my much neglected RSS feed.

Well... crap.

He was blessed with a VERY long life, and this clip scared me to death when I was little.

Fan Death

I learned about this today while googling information my mother used to scare me as a child. BTW – my mother really is awesome. She used to tell me that you could develop Bell's Palsy by sleeping with a fan on your head.

While googling that I found this: Fan Death

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association advises that "although the use of fans may increase comfort at temperatures less than 90°F (less than 32.2°C), fans are not protective against heatstroke when temperatures reach greater than or equal to 90°F (greater than or equal to 32.2°C) and humidity exceeds 35%,"[15] and provides a similar but simpler warning to the public on their website.[16] These temperature and humidity conditions are consistent with a death cited in an earlier article critical of fan death, which suggested that fan use was irrelevant.[6]

Be careful out there.

StitchDraw

SO COOL. These are absolutely amazing.

There's more over at the stitchdraw blog - found via poppytalk.

I don't care. I'm going to post this even if you are all over it. So there. My blog. That I never post to anymore. (BTW – a BUILDING FELL OVER, like completely intact. Well, not completely but you know.)

So June HAS been the month to fear the reaper – I know, BAD joke, but whatever... I'm leaving it. Bea Arthur (OMG, loved the Golden Girls), David Carradine (sorry, I hated Kung Fu), Ed McMahon (I watched the hell out of some Star Search) and Billy Mays. I heard the news about Michael Jackson on the radio. Yes, I still listen to the radio. Which is appropriate since sitting by the radio and recording songs off of it was the only way I could listen to music outside of the radio when I was younger. I didn't have much money to buy tapes and the tapes I did buy had to be approved by my mother (Michael Jackson was off-limits, which made me like him even more).

I was also not allowed to watch MTV and VH1... you know back when the stations actually played music. Times have seriously changed since neither of those stations could break from some really awful programming to show an actual WHOLE video by an entertainer who helped define a music video but whatever I'm rambling. My point being that I was not allowed, so I figured out a way around the block on the TV and watched music videos to my heart's content when my mother wasn't around. I think this explains a lot.

So, I'm posting the video I remember waiting for the most... I waited for other MJ videos, but my mother HATED this one in particular... and you will see why. :p

p.s. Stop it after the video ends, there's some weird Donahue clip at the end. :p

p.s. While I was writing this a coworker came in and said "Are you STILL listening to Michael Jackson?!" Yes, yes I am... DEAL WITH IT.

I'm deeply jealous of the patience it takes to create these. I have that patience with a pencil. A 100 hours is nothing on a drawing. For some reason I can't translate that when I work on a machine, I get too antsy.

I got two emails about this, this morning. Excellent. Now to just make sure the sizing isn't for pre-teens. ;)

Saw this on Moda's blog this morning. Definitely a feel good video. :D And like she said, if you don't like this you have no soul. I totally cried a little.

No Posting Today

20 Things You Didn't Know About... Nothing

1 There is vastly more nothing than something. Roughly 74 percent of the universe is “nothing,” or what physicists call dark energy; 22 percent is dark matter, particles we cannot see. Only 4 percent is baryonic matter, the stuff we call something.

2 And even something is mostly nothing. Atoms overwhelmingly consist of empty space. Matter’s solidity is an illusion caused by the electric fields created by subatomic particles.

3 There is more and more nothing every second. In 1998 astronomers measuring the expansion of the universe determined that dark energy is pushing apart the universe at an ever-accelerating speed. The discovery of nothing—and its ability to influence the fate of the cosmos—is considered the most important astronomical finding of the past decade.

4 But even nothing has a weight. The energy in dark matter is equivalent to a tiny mass; there is about one pound of dark energy in a cube of empty space 250,000 miles on each side.

5 In space, no one can hear you scream: Sound, a mechanical wave, cannot travel through a vacuum. Without matter to vibrate through, there is only silence.

6 So what if Kramer falls in a forest? Luckily, electromagnetic waves, including light and radio waves, need no medium to travel through, letting TV stations broadcast endless reruns of Seinfeld, the show about nothing.

7 Light can travel through a vacuum, but there is nothing to refract it. Alas for extraterrestrial romantics, stars do not twinkle in outer space.

8 Black holes are not holes or voids; they are the exact opposite of nothing, being the densest concentration of mass known in the universe.

9 “Zero” was first seen in cuneiform tablets written around 300 B.C. by Babylonians who used it as a placeholder (to distinguish 36 from 306 or 360, for example). The concept of zero in its mathematical sense was developed in India in the fifth century.

10 Any number divided by zero is . . . nothing, not even zero. The equation is mathematically impossible.

11 It is said that Abdülhamid II, sultan of the Ottoman Empire in the early 1900s, had censors expunge references to H2O from chemistry books because he was sure it stood for “Hamid the Second is nothing.”

12 Medieval art was mostly flat and two-dimensional until the 15th century, when the Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi conceived of the vanishing point, the place where parallel lines converge into nothingness. This allowed for the development of perspective in art.

13 Aristotle once wrote, “Nature abhors a vacuum,” and so did he. His complete rejection of vacuums and voids and his subsequent influence on centuries of learning prevented the adoption of the concept of zero in the Western world until around the 13th century, when Italian bankers found it to be extraordinarily useful in financial transactions.

14 Vacuums do not suck things. They create spaces into which the surrounding atmosphere pushes matter.

15 Creatio ex nihilo, the belief that the world was created out of nothing, is one of the most common themes in ancient myths and religions.

16 Current theories suggest that the universe was created out of a state of vacuum energy, that is, nothing.

17 But to a physicist there is no such thing as nothing. Empty space is instead filled with pairs of particles and antiparticles, called virtual particles, that quickly form and then, in accordance with the law of energy conservation, annihilate each other in about 10-25 second.

18 So Aristotle was right all along.

19 These virtual particles popping in and out of existence create energy. In fact, according to quantum mechanics, the energy contained in all the power plants and nuclear weapons in the world doesn’t equal the theoretical energy contained in the empty spaces between these words.

20 In other words, nothing could be the key to the theory of everything.
